Japanese gampi bark handmade paper, that has been hand-dyed with Kakishibu (persimmon dye), and encased in a maple wooden box.

Rustle, 14”X8.5”, 2019

Rustle mimics the tactile qualities, texture and sound of leaves. In this work, Japanese Gampi sheets are treated with Konnyaku, and  hand-dyed with Kakishibu. The work requires us to engage with it, by turning the sheet one by one and listening to the sound produced by this action. This work demands a one-on-one interaction with the viewer where both, the body and the mind are involved to create a stronger sensory impact than, simply standing in front of an image. Experiencing the sheets from thick to thin references a gradual breakdown of leaves which is a sign of death or an opportunity for a new beginning, mimicking the Life Cycle.
